Dream a Little Dream of Me: Sustainable Bridal Lingerie

For the first semester of my last year of my degree I was given the opportunity to design for LOUNGE underwear, an intimates company set up right here in the Midlands. Led by the ‘Wedding Boom’ set to happen this year I decided to create a bridal collection, inspired by historical British royal weddings and springtime florals. Despite the need to design for an external client, I couldn’t help but add in a rather large helping of my own personal style, and I am enchanted by the storm of dragonflies dancing across the basque and cape.

As someone who wants to make a positive impact on the fashion industry, both whilst at university and beyond, I committed to making my project as sustainable as possible, with the vast majority of the collection being created from an old, secondhand wedding dress. Watching something so special being transformed into another beautiful creation was so much fun, and I’m using the same technique for my final major project this term as well.

This outfit is comprised of a basque, complete with hidden blue details, such as blue inner satin cups and bone casing, to act as the bride’s ‘something blue’, and a matching pair of knickers with a sweet ruched back and subtle blue elastic. Over the top of this ensemble is a gorgeous flowing cape, adorned in butterflies and lace embroidery, with the LOUNGE logo stitched in for a subtle sense of branding.

I styled it up with a vintage pair of white stockings and 1930s style dancing shoes, which I featured in a blog post many years ago, which you can read here. The overall effect I was going for was a historical inspired modern bridal look, which suits the LOUNGE customer, whilst remaining true to my aesthetic.

As I continue with designing I am finding so much joy in creating upcycled and sustainable pieces, which makes me even more proud of what I create, as it allows me to bring my vision to life without harming the planet. I am delighted to announce that I was recently awarded a First for this collection, which I am so proud about.
