Summer Dresses: The Sustainable Edit

It’s finally dresses season, and I am overjoyed. There’s something so wonderful about the first warm day of spring when you can pop on a cotton mini dress, bonus points if it’s floral, and spend the day indulging in joyous springtime activities.

Buying new dresses each summer isn’t a viable way to keep our beautiful world safe, so each piece in this sustainable edit has been found on secondhand sites, such as Depop, to try and help create a more circular fashion industry. As always, if these pieces don’t immediately call your name, or if you find yourself struggling to imagine them pairing well with your existing wardrobe, then take a step back, and focus on building your own personal style – don’t buy into trends or styles just for the sake of it.

When summer hits I basically live in dresses, so I tried to cover the wide spectrum of occasions that entails in this edit. From more casual breezy looks, such as this gorgeous olive green number, to dresses fit for an occasion, these are secondhand gems that will fit seamlessly into any summer wardrobe.

For Love & Lemons is a brand that I’ve lusted over since I was fourteen and first stumbled across their ultra feminine lingerie collections, and so when I see their womenswear pieces pop up on resale sites it always catches my attention. Every little detail on For Love & Lemons pieces is so perfectly thought out and delicately placed, and this stunning baby blue mini dress is no different. I would style this with a pair of baby pink kitten heels, such as these adorable pre-loved rose-detail ones, to bring out the pretty colour of the satin binding, and tie a matching ribbon in my hair.

For an occasion I’d be opting for either this stunning backless vintage Monsoon dress, or the floral poppy print silk midi dress. The pink floor-length dress would be perfect for a summer wedding, ball, or formal event, paired with a pair of classic stilettos and matching clutch bag, with an elegant up-do. When choosing accessories let the dress be the true statement as this truly is a show-stopper. For a more casual event, such as an al fresco dinner party or garden celebration, this poppy print dress would be a great choice. Styled up with a wardrobe staple of mine, a pair of Castañer wedges, and a basket bag, this would be a beautiful colourful summer outfit.

Finally, the most wearable genre of dresses: summer day dresses. Pop these ever-so-comfortable light dresses on to nip to the shops, head out for brunch, or explore a new city on a summer day trip. Both the classic white one and the beautiful olive green one would pair well with either trainers or sandals, dependent on the situation, for a casual, but feminine, outfit.
