The Shirred Top I’ve Fallen In Love With

How to make a shirred top

Top – Handmade // Trousers – Zara (old, similar here) // Sandals – I Saw It First (old, similar here) // Bag – eBay // Earrings – New Look // Sunglasses – Primark

Shirred fabric is a massive trend this spring; whether it’s a shirred crop top or a dress with shirred details, it seems to be in every shop I walk in to, and I’m not complaining! I love the look it creates, and it’s so darn comfortable, that I decided to let myself get inspired by the trend and have a go at making a shirred piece myself.

Believe it or not, this fetching little yellow number is actually made using an old pillow case; making this a fabulously affordable (and sustainable!) piece for summer, which you can make for next to nothing. I was very inspired by Geneva’s pattern from A Pair & A Spare, find it here, when making this top, as I’d never tried shirring before and felt like I’d need a little guidance, but the final design of the piece is my own.

I wore this top, see similar shirred yellow tops here and here if you don’t want to make your own, to explore Rome last weekend and I was so impressed with how comfortable it was. The slightly cropped cut of the top paired perfectly with my white palazzo trousers, see similar ones here and in petite here, and created a very chic and tailored look. I love the combination of pastel colours and white, and this soft lemon yellow is perfect for those sunny spring days.

I paired the outfit with my current favourite bag of the moment, my straw eBay find, that managed to hold all of the essentials for a day spent in Rome. I didn’t expect it to be able to hold so much, but I managed to fit everything I needed, without having to carry a bulky, heavy bag; which I was very thankful for. To add a vintage touch to my outfit I added my white cat-eye Primark sunglasses, which matched perfectly with my white trousers and sandals. Then, to add another little pop of colour to my outfit, I added my latest statement earrings, this beautiful yellow floral pair (also see them worn here). I loved how ready for summer this outfit looked, and it’s got me excited for days spent in the sun over the coming months.

I was so lucky to be exploring Rome with my friend Giulia, who has grown up there and knows the city well, so she knew little hidden treasures, just like this shop. This trendy boutique, with its own little courtyard, kitted out with comfortable seats and an array of potted plants, made for the perfect mid-shopping trip break and I was so glad to be able to have a little sit down! I’ll be talking more about what I go up to in Rome, and some other secret treasures just like this one, in an upcoming blog post.
