Reinventing A Look: Jumpers & Dresses

Dress with a jumper on top.

Jumper – Zara (similar here) // Dress – ASOS (similar patterned skirt here, similar shaped dress here) // Heels – Primark (similar here) // Fur coat – New Look

Whether you just want to create a different look, try something new, or you’re going to an event where a dress would be too formal, pairing a jumper with a dress is a great look to try. I love trying this trend with both mini and midi dresses, especially this gorgeous floral dress from ASOS (old season). I’ve attached a similarly patterned midi skirt above for you to shop if you love how this outfit looks! This dress is the ASOS Kate Dress style, see me styling it up (without a jumper!) here; they’ve brought this dress out the last couple of years in the spring time so fingers crossed they bring it back this year.

This would be a great way to rejuvenate a look if you’re working with a small wardrobe, or a small selection of clothes on holiday, for example. By simply adding a jumper over the top of a dress, whether it’s a mini or midi dress, you can get so many new outfit combinations. It’s also a great way to style up your spring and summer dresses in the winter time, when they’d usually be lying dormant in your wardrobe.

There’s really no rules when it comes to styling this up; whether you go for a snuggly piece of knitwear or a more figure hugging roll neck, it’s up to you. I’d go for a rather neutral colour for the jumper though, in order to let the midi dress do the talking, as in my wardrobe it’s usually the skirts and dresses that will have the decoration on them rather than more decorative jumper. In the same way, if you are wearing a highly decorated jumper that grabs people’s attention potentially opt for a block colour skirt like the blush pink satin one I wore on New Year’s Eve (see here). Two overly patterned pieces would probably just end up clashing and detract from the very classy styled up outfit.

For this outfit I picked out one key colour from the pattern on the bottom of the dress, for this outfit it was pink (what a shock!) and then matched this to the shoes I wore as well to tie the whole look together. This colour coordination helped to make the whole outfit flow together, and also allowed me to wear as much pink as is humanly possible, which is always a good thing.

What do you think of this styling tip, would you ever layer a jumper over a dress? Tell me in the comments below!

Cute outfit! I have never thought about throwing a jumper over a dress before, but it’s such a good idea, I may try it out at some point.
