Wanderlust Diaries: Cala’n Bosch, Menorca

After taking a recent trip to Menorca and rethinking my travel content I decided to restructure my wanderlust diary posts to act as a guide to the places I visit and then continue to share a travel diary underneath, which is what my posts were more heavily focused on before. If you’re planning a trip to Menorca I hope this post comes in handy as I share my tips on where to go, what to do and what to eat.

Where is it?
Cala’n Bosch is a coastal town on the South Western tip of Menorca, one of the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean sea. As it is a Spanish island they speak Spanish and the currency is the Euro.

What is there to do?
Cala’n Bosch is quite a quiet touristy town meaning the main attractions are the beach and your hotel pool, but there are also a few other things to do in and around Cala’n Bosch. If you’re planning to go and explore the island and head to different beaches I would recommend hiring a car as beaches further along the coast aren’t in easy walking distance. Hiring a car also gives you a chance to explore further afield as Menorca isn’t a very big island and you would be able to take most of it in in a car.
I recommend taking a boat trip to the surrounding beaches and coves; I did two different boat trips during my stay, a day trip and a sunset trip, both with Amigos Boat Trips. The day trip was longer and included a two hour stop in the nearby town of Cala Galdana, where you’ll find a gorgeous sandy cove surrounded by luscious green forests and cliffs with stunning houses overlooking the ocean. We had our lunch in a beautiful restaurant situated on the edge of the cliff which can be found immediately after stepping off where the boat is docked and turning right; its views over the cove cannot be beaten. Whilst on the boat make sure to head to the lower deck and have a look at the glass bottom to see all the fish and sea creatures who live in the Mediterranean sea! The sunset trip departs on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and takes in the same beaches and coves as the day trip, without the stop over, and concludes with a beautiful viewing of the sun setting over the ocean off the coast of Cala’n Bosch. I’d never seen anything quite as stunning as this sunset and I’d say it was one of the highlights of my trip. Remember to make sure to book at least a day in advance if you are planning to go on any boat trips as they fill up fast.
Other than boat trips there are also lots of water sports and water activities to take part in all along the coast of Menorca, whether you’re into jet skiing, snorkelling or a classic banana boat there’s something for everyone. Make sure to visit each different company in the town/on the beach to check their different prices as some companies’ rates can be very high and there is a lot of competition.

Where should you stay?
I stayed in a lovely apartment style hotel overlooking the marina in Cala’n Bosch called Roc Lago Park, which was entirely accessible for those who are wheelchair users. The use of ramps throughout the entire complex makes this perfect accommodation for anyone who uses a wheelchair, is pushing a child in a pram or is in need of flat surfaces to get around due to poor mobility or illness. Although this hotel was far from luxury it had everything you need and the view was just an added bonus!
There are a great number of different hotels in and around Cala’n Bosch, it is all up to personal preference.

Where should you eat?
I have a number of different suggestions on where to eat, based on what type of food you’re looking for. The restaurants in Cala’n Bosch are all situated around the edge of the marina amongst lots of different restaurants, cafes and bars and there truly is something for everyone (from fancy seafood restaurants to a Burger King!).
For a light lunch, for example a toastie or a baguette, I would definitely recommend visiting El Pato, situated on the left hand side of the marina underneath Roc Lago Park. Their baguettes were delicious, I loved the vegetable baguette, and the staff were possibly the nicest and most welcoming group of staff I’ve ever met. This place could not be faulted; they even gave you a free shot, or a lollipop for under 18s, at the end of your meal!
If you’re after a larger lunch or fancy some seafood I would head to Bahia, which is further along the road from El Pato. Their sardines, coated in a garnish of garlic and herbs, were to die for and there truly isn’t a nicer feeling than dining on fresh fish whilst looking out at the ocean. Again, their staff were lovely, particularly Hassan who was stood outside the restaurant welcoming people in. He went the extra mile to learn our names and greet us every time we walked past and it really did entice us in.
If smoothies are your thing then El Pescador is your place; the ‘Red Banana’ made of strawberries and bananas was beyond amazing and a fabulous way to refresh and cool down amid the hot Menorcan sunshine. This is also a great place to bring children, if you’re travelling with a family, as there was a play area within the restaurant so you can sit back and relax while knowing your kids are safe and occupied.
For all you meat lovers Toro Negro is your place, I had the best steak of my entire life at this place and I wish I could go back and have another. I ordered a medium rare sirloin steak with some country bread and garlic mayonnaise on the side and I couldn’t recommend it more, the steak and garlic mayonnaise tasted so good together you just have to try it for yourself.
If you’re more of a fish person then why not try La Marina; I found that this restaurant felt very luxurious, though they weren’t charging an obscene amount of money. I had the garlic prawns, which were absolutely delicious, and my entire family were impressed without not only the amount of food they got but also the presentation of the food which was very high end and beautiful.

What night life is there?
Cala’n Bosch is far from a party town, in fact almost everywhere is closed by 1am, but through the evening until about midnight there are various types of entertainment around the town. Chaplins, a bar and restaurant on the far side of the marina, hold a quiz every night at 9:30 where you can win various prizes that you can redeem in and around Cala’n Bosch, such as a free banana boat trip. For shows and live entertainment we headed to Valentin Star Hotel, a hotel and bar which provided live acts every night. There was an ABBA tribute, a boy band night and even a Millenial themed show! This was a must do if you love a good old singalong. Whilst on the topic of Valentin I must mention my favourite act, a tribute band who performed a boy band themed night singing everything from The Jersey Boys all the way through to Take That and One Direction (what’s not to love?). My Travel Diary

We arrived into Mahon airport, on the east side of Menorca, on the morning of the 24th of July after a flight in the early hours out of Birmingham. We had a wonderful flight with Jet2 who were delightfully happy throughout the entire flight and kept playing holiday tunes to get everyone in a great mood; the welcoming nature and efficiency of the cabin crew honestly could not be faulted, it was probably the nicest flight I’ve ever been on and I’ll definitely be flying Jet2 again! We then got an hour long transfer to our hotel, Roc Lago Park, which is situated on the west side of the island in the town of Cala’n Bosch.
We spent the first couple of days of our holiday relaxing by the pool and exploring the town; we also had free access to a water park in conjunction with our stay at Roc Lago Park so we ventured out to explore that as well. The ‘water park’ as it was described turned out to be an over-glorified hotel pool and I wouldn’t recommend paying to get in if you don’t have free entry, however if you do end up staying in Roc Lago Park then it’s worth the walk across the road for the larger pool and wave machine.

On Tuesday evening we departed on our sunset boat trip which took us round the bay to visit all the different coves and concluded with a viewing of the gorgeous sunset over the Mediterranean sea. The photo opportunities on a boat at golden hour were unbelievable and my little blogger heart was honestly fit to bursting with excitement at the possibilities! Although I felt a little seasick I still managed to enjoy this fabulous trip and we spent the entire time sat up on the top of the boat looking out over the never ending sea on one side of the boat and the stunning Menorcan coastline on the other.

I have so many photos from this boat trip it could honestly have a blog post to itself but I’d like to share some of my favourites with you, as they are possibly the most gorgeous photos I will ever take! Another perk of this trip was that they even gave you a free glass of bubbly at the end, I don’t drink but I’m sure if you do there isn’t anything quite as good as drinking a glass of champagne whilst watching the sun set.

The following day we got on another boat trip, a day trip this time, and set off to explore the coves and beaches again. This time we sat on the lower deck of the boat, mainly to get out of the sun for a little bit, but it also gave us a chance to look at the glass bottom ‘reflex’ system at the back of the boat which meant we could see all of the sea creatures swimming beneath the boat. A while into the trip I moved out to the front of the boat and positioned myself on the very edge of the boat with my feet dangling off the edge, if you ever get the chance to ride on a boat like this I’d definitely recommend it as it was one of the loveliest, free feelings I’ve ever felt.

As a part of this trip we had a two hour stop at Cala Galdana, a beach further along the coast from Cala’n Bosch, where we had the chance to swim in the sea and get lunch. We had lunch in a gorgeous restaurant overlooking the cove and I got coconut ice cream served in an actual coconut!

We spent the remainder of our holiday relaxing around the town and visiting the beach; I even swam all the way out of the cove and sat in a cave under a cliff, I felt like a mermaid! All in all this was an incredibly relaxing trip full of lots of sunshine, laughs and sea, just as a good summer holiday should be. I’d definitely recommend Cala’n Bosch, and Menorca in general, if you’re after a relaxing, laid back holiday.
