Bows: The Sustainable Edit

Bows really are the moment and, as someone who has accessorised with bows for many, many years, I am absolutely overjoyed by it. Watching people find joy in the hyper-feminine and whimsical is exactly what I love about fashion, so it’ll come as no surprise that I am a big lover of the bow trend, and want to incorporate them in to every outfit possible.

However, with that being said, it’s also important to recognise it as what it is, for most people: a trend. I know that the bow-themed pieces I have in my wardrobe, some of which I’ve owned for many years, will be worn for many years to come, but for lots of people I’m sure that’s not the case. So, as I have previously discussed here on the blog, it’s so important to consider if you really want to partake in the trend and add bow pieces to your collection. Will you honestly be wearing these pieces a year from now? If the answer is no, then maybe give this one a miss, and search for pieces that truly fit your personal style instead.

But, if you’re like me, and enjoy wearing ultra-feminine, decadent pieces, and are absolutely relishing the chance for bows to have their moment, then I’ve collated some gorgeous secondhand bow-inspired pieces for you to shop*.

1. Pearl bow detail necklace // 2. Monochrome bow bag // 3. Bow graphic baby tee // 4. Sequinned bow back detail dress // 5. Bow drop earrings // 6. Bow claw clip // 7. Bow detail black ballet flats // 8. Bow detail satin top // 9. Bow crochet key-ring // 10. Black bow detail halter neck // 11. Bow detail knitted hand-warmers

When it comes to bows there’s two real ways to wear them: the bigger the better, or delicate details. If you’re more of a fan of the former, then this gorgeous sequin dress, which went viral just before Christmas, is a perfect choice. Although the festive season may be over this timeless piece, in an ever-classy monochromatic colour-way, will look stylish in your wardrobe for years (and many party seasons!) to come. Style with black heels, a black clutch bag and a black hair bow, for a coordinated celebratory look.

Another way I love to bring exciting fashion elements into my outfits is through my shoes, as we can see from this post and this post. The black bow detail ballet flats included in this post are a perfect combination of the bow frenzy and the rise of the ballet flat, meaning you’ll look uber-stylish this season; yet they’re also a very classic, smart pair of shoes, so you can keep wearing them, and styling them in different ways, for many years to come. For a fun look style them with a funky pair of tights; my current favourite pair are white argyle, but these would also look pretty with a black fishnet pair, or even a baby pink.

I’ve loved adding bows to my outfits in subtle little ways; through bow detail earrings, hair accessories and even stitching bows on to some of my more plain handbags. The accessories I’ve chosen to feature here are so pretty, I especially love the pearl necklace with a delicate bow charm, and it would pair so nicely with the silver bow drop earrings. I was lucky enough to find a gorgeous handmade pair in a vintage shop in Hanoi, Vietnam, with a stunning pearl detail, which I’m sure will feature in a future post, and it’s definitely made me want to look to homemade jewellery shops more frequently in the future.
