Fashion Week Series – Biggest Trends From MFW

Milan Fashion Week brought so many new, beautiful trends to light and I was in love with so many of the collections we saw this past week. I am so excited for these trends to arrive later this year, so let’s have a look at what we’ve got to expect.

RED AND PINK

Red and pink as a colour combination was seen numerous times across the MFW catwalk, and I actually really like it. I barely ever combine these two colours, even though they are two of my most worn shades, but I love how beautiful it looks. The first piece, a gorgeous cami top and tailored trousers combination by Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafini, screams pure class and this could easily become stylish work-wear. I am in love with this stunning rosy Blumarine dress with its delicate sleeves and intricate pattern and I shall definitely be looking for a high street dupe. Vivetta’s red and pink floral coat shows a more decorative and bold approach to the trend; I feel like a trend always steps up a gear when it’s put on a coat, as it’s just that little bit more eye catching, but I love this. A darker version of this trend was shown by Marni, with the red and pink tones placed on top of a black background; this is probably a lot more seasonally appropriate for a lot of people, and I think this will probably be the colour palette we see the most.

WHITE

White is one of my most worn colours all year round anyway, but I know that a lot of people don’t like wearing it in winter. Thanks to this trend everyone now has the excuse to – and I’m not complaining! This first coat from Blumarine is one of my favourite pieces from the entirety of MFW; doesn’t it just scream class to you? This bridal gown from Dolce & Gabbana may seem like a very extravagant approach to the trend but elements of it, like white tulle and white lace, could definitely influence your wardrobe. Ermanno Scervino’s all white outfit is gorgeous and incorporates a few different shades of white into one look for a look that has dimension and flows well together. Finally, this minimalist look from Jil Sander’s collection shows a very laid-back, casual way to wear this ‘all white’ trend.

BUTTONS

Buttons, and double breasted garments, were all over the catwalk and I’m so excited for this to be a trend. I love the look of double breasted coats and skirts, and I can’t wait to see what other garments will be influenced by this style. Alberta Ferretti’s very western use of trend also incorporates that trend, whilst showing off how buttons can be used within a blouse. Dolce & Gabbana’s more classic use of double breasted buttons in a suit shows the continuation of the two piece suit for women that will continue to be a trend into the winter months. The scattering of buttons and asymmetrical double breasting seen in this No. 21 piece looks so cute and I’m sure this would be a good look for street style.

CLASHING PATTERNS

Clashing patterns have been seen a lot this season and each fashion week brings a new approach to the trend. This very autumnal coloured piece, from Anteprima, shows a beautiful way to combine a bolder, more colourful pattern with a more muted, subtle one to achieve a chic, stylish version of this trend. Moving away from subtlety Gucci went all out with this tweed patterned concoction, and I love all of the vibrant colours within it. Versace’s colourful look incorporates typically ‘summer’ colours with these bright, almost neon, colours but I like the combination of bright colours with more muted shades. This final look from Vivetta is possibly my favourite of the bunch as I like the very wearable inclusion of patterns within the denim pieces.

ANIMAL PRINT

Moving on from clashing patterns, animal print was used throughout MFW as an additional pattern to already busy pieces. The first piece, from Dolce & Gabbana, combines animal print and a subtle black embossed floral print in a very chic wrap waist suit. The second look has animal print fur along the edges of a very luxurious purple coat; I like that with MFW we are moving away from the heavy and in your face animal print and going for minimal animal print touches instead. This third look from Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafini shows a very pretty and muted animal print, combining it with the red colour that is going to be oh so popular. Finally, this gorgeous animal print fur coat from Versace is so glamorous, I love it.

FUR

Fur is such a classic winter trend and I’m so glad that it featured so heavily this MFW. Anteprima showed off a very classic fur coat in this gorgeous rusty orange colour, which they styled with a contrasting metallic top. I love the combination of different materials within one look to spice it up, and the colour is to die for. Fendi opted for a much softer, muted fur with this brown number, and I love how wearable this is. In some cases very elaborate fur can seem too much like occasion wear, whereas a softer, shorter fur seems more appropriate for day to day. Marco di Vincenzo shows off an entirely fur piece in the form of this giant, fluffy look; the almost dual tone piece changes colour as it catches the light and creates a gorgeously glamorous look. Finally, Versace used fur to accessorise within their looks, especially with elegant fur scarves and handbags. This is such a new and fun way to incorporate fur into your look without going for the classic fur coat.

TWEED

I’ve always been a lover of tweed, I remember picking out my first monochrome tweed skirt aged only ten, and I am so glad that this trend is back again. This gorgeous monochrome look from Dolce & Gabbana is ever so classy and also brings in the trench coat trend that has cropped up time and time again. This beautiful wrap around, scarf-like piece from Ermanno Scervino looks so chic, and I love how it lies on the model; it’s almost like an intentional windswept look. Of course I’d love a pink tweed and this monochrome tweed trench coat by Marni is simply gorgeous. Versace went all out with tweed in their collection and this tweed three piece set shows such an easy and preppy way to wear this trend.

FLORALS

Florals are my thing and I love how they were included in MFW; this first piece from Blumarine includes intricately sequined red roses, showing off the pink and red trend yet again. Dark florals were everywhere and I love this one from Dolce & Gabbana’s collection; the inclusion of headbands and shoes in the same colours of the flowers ties the whole look together and this is how I would style this trend myself. Another dark floral piece, this time with the addition of bold, 3D flowers, from Prada shows a way of including this trend within a coat look. Vivetta approached this trend a little differently and I love the delicate and intricate details on this look; I will definitely be on the look out for an embroidered coat just like this one.

I do like the idea of clashing patterns, I have seen a few dresses that incorporated two different patterns into one dress and thought they looked gorgeous, so it would be interesting to see how they look with other items of clothing besides dresses. I am also a sucker for pinks and red clothing so I would love to see what clothes come out.
