Should Bloggers Be Expected To Be Models?

When I think of models I, like most people, primarily think of the type of models we see plastered all over our adverts, catwalks and magazines. Tall, thin and beautiful. We’re told all the time that those are the requirements needed in order to be a model, yet every single day I see people’s blog photos of them looking gorgeous showing off their latest finds to put in a post or on Instagram. So I beg the question, do we as bloggers take on the responsibility to become a new type of model?

We do everything that models do; we wear up to date, on trend clothes, showcase pieces and pose in pretty locations. In fact, it could be argued that we in fact do more than ‘typical models’ as we plan the shots, find the locations and in some cases even take the shot ourselves. We are the models; but also the photographer, director and manager.

We are a new type of model, who are so much more than just a pretty face. We combine the art of looking stunning in a photo with the hard work and organisation that creates these fabulous shots.

Although I see so many beautiful bloggers looking stunning in their photos there still seems to be a stigma surrounding it, with so many bloggers believing that it’s the ‘pretty bloggers’ who end up being more successful. I definitely don’t count myself as one of those ‘pretty bloggers’, but who’s to say I’m not beautiful in my own way? There’s enough of the typically pretty girls in the actual modelling industry, so why we don’t embrace a new and different type of model within the blogging one.

Every single blogger I know has their own gorgeous qualities which make them unique and beautiful, and because most of them are just normal, everyday girls there’s something just a little more relatable about them and what they look like. You won’t find girls who are over a size 6, or have acne, or don’t have perfect white teeth, on the cover of Vogue, but I see it all the time on different blogs. Bloggers’ imperfections make them the best type of models out there, because they show off clothes and products in a relatable and authentic way.

Seeing impossibly beautiful women in magazines is all well and good but it can sometimes be soul destroying, particularly in a world where aesthetics and ideals are defined through media. By showcasing individual beauty through blog photography we are opening up a whole new type of modelling, which focuses more on real, authentic beauty; flaws and all.

As bloggers who are willing to put out photos of ourselves I believe we do take on a responsibility to become these new type of models. We are breaking the mould of a typical model and showing off our true beauty, no matter what we look like. We are creating a chance to potentially change the way that media influences our society, particularly on young people, by showing that every single person can be photographed and look gorgeous.
