Fashion Week Series – Biggest Trends From NYFW

The first of the Autumn/Winter 2019 catwalk shows have debuted and New York Fashion Week has started to dictate the trends we’ll be seeing later this year. From leather looks to sheer pastels, this autumn is set to be an exciting one. I’m going to go through all of the main trends I’ve noticed from doing a lot of trend forecasting following NYFW, so if you’d like to see all of the trends you’ve got to look forward, just keep reading.

PURPLE/LILAC

Lilac has already made its way into my wardrobe, and my Instagram feed, and it looks like we’re set to see it a lot more as the year goes on. Lilac, and even some darker purple tones, cropped up time and time again all throughout NYFW and I’m so excited to see what lilac coats, jumpers and trousers we see popping up on the high street this autumn. This first look from Kate Spade includes a look that I’m dying to try, high waisted button up wide leg trousers, and I’m in love with the colour of them. The combination of so many different purple tones in so many of these looks is a trend in itself, and it’s a trend that appears again in the three other looks here. Nanushka’s boxy fit lilac jacket is such a chic addition to any outfit, and this would be a great way to add lilac into a neutral outfit. The third look, a satin look from Tom Ford, includes different tones of purples and blues and I’m loving the open blouse look; this slightly scandalous, feminine look manages to look classy whilst still being sexy and I’m so on board for it. The last look, a dreamy combination by Vince, pairs purple with pink (my dream combination) and I love the crushed velvet. Velvet is such a great style for winter and I can’t wait to see where this trend takes us.

LEATHER

Leather, particularly wet look leather, was a massive trend all across NYFW. Black leather took over the runway, especially in Alexander Wang’s collection, where this first piece is from. Looks, seemingly inspired by The Matrix, with long leather trench coats and thin sunglasses, popped up time and time again. It is repeated again in Alyx’s very leather based collection, with this gorgeous boxy leather trench coat, and yet again in Badgley Mischka’s collection with some leather, or potentially vinyl, trousers. This last look, from Camilla and Marc’s collection, includes this gorgeous brown leather trench coat piece. This beautiful brown colour keeps cropping up time and time again and I love just how beautiful this glossy, wet leather looks.

BELTS

Thick belts, that accentuate the waist, have jumped back into style and I, for one, am incredibly happy about this. This classic 1940s inspired style, with the small waist and full skirt, is such a beautiful style and can fit so many different body shapes that I think this will definitely be a hit. This first piece from Brock Collection shows a perfect way to style up a thick belt; popping it on over a blazer and dress could prove a fabulous way to wear them in autumn where you may still want to have elements of your summer style, such as a summer dress, paired with something to keep you warm. Pairing a belt with a bohemian mini dress, like this one from Laura Garcia, is a still that I will definitely be wearing, in fact this is one of my favourite looks from the entire fashion week! Rachel Comey has a much more colourful, contemporary approach to the trend with this paperbag waist bright pink midi skirt and I love the clashing colours. Finally, this incredibly vintage inspired set from Alena Akhmadullina just screams ‘1940s’, and I am in love. Anything vintage is right up my street and if this gorgeous style comes back I’ll be over the moon.

ANIMAL PRINT

Animal print really isn’t going away, is it? Yet again, animal print was all over the catwalk. This embroidered snake skin, giraffe hybrid from Alena Akhmadullina is so chic, and I love the inclusion of a thick belt to accentuate the waist. This gorgeous leopard print coat from Alexander Wang would fit right in in a high street store, and this would look gorgeous with a black midi dress underneath. Kate Spade’s leopard print blouse, high waisted trousers and leopard print headband is a gorgeous look, and I’m actually shocked that this exact outfit hasn’t already been spotted in my wardrobe. I am in love with Nanushka’s semi clear plastic animal print midi skirt and this would look so perfect paired with a neutral outfit.

POLKA DOTS

Polka dots are such a chic and classic style and these designs will all look gorgeous in midi dresses, especially if the belted, wide skirt look comes back into style. The first look, from Brock Collection, features the on trend colours of red and white and I love the addition of ruffles; ruffles were seen quite a lot among all of the collections and they are also a potential trend. Filles à Papa’s polka dot suit is such a cosmopolitan, gorgeous look and it is an iconic look without any blouse underneath; it is the epitome of classy and sexy feminine. The third look, from Maison Kitsune, features a uniquely cut polka dot dress, and I love how it is layered over a pair of jeans. Finally, this stunning lemon yellow dress from Rodarte’s collection, is simply stunning. It reminds me of a classic 1930s style day dress and I love all of these vintage styles that are coming back into style.

GLITTER & VELVET

Glitter and velvet are such classic winter trends, just think of all of the festive occasion-wear outfits, and this fashion week lives up to expectation. Hellessy’s glittery red dress is such a fabulous inspiration for festive outfits and I just love how glamorous it is; I get real Hollywood starlet feels from it. The same vibe surrounds this Monique Lhuillier dress, with a fabulous caped train; this classic design compared with such a glamorous material leads to a stunning piece. As well as glitter and sequins, velvet is also a trend that is repeated across different collections, particularly in typically autumnal toned colours. The first velvet piece from Laura Garcia, is in this stunning burnt yellow colour, and also has a very classic cut. The same can be said for this dark sandy coloured dress from Vince’s collection; I just love the delicate look of velvet!

STRIPES

Stripes were seen time and time again across NYFW. Contrasting stripes were seen in Audra’s collection in this chic blouse and trouser combination, and I love the flattering linear look. More subtle lines were included in Hellessy’s design, as they ever so softly weave themselves in within the print, making this a very easy way to wear the stripes trend if you’re going for more of a minimalist look. Clashing stripes are seen again in this gorgeous Kate Spade piece, which I am in love with; the war, toned pinks and purples are so beautiful and I love this interpretation of the generic autumnal colours. Sticking to a more typical autumnal colour palette Ulla Johnson’s striped coat is gorgeous; I actually have pieces in these exact colours in my wardrobe and I’m hoping that this look finds its way to the high street.

RED & PINK

Lucky for me, some of my favourite colours are coming into style this autumn (as if they’re ever out of style for me, let’s be honest!). This silk maxi dress from Brock Collection is beyond gorgeous and I love the cut of it, which accentuates the beautiful female body. The second red look, by Hellessy, is a stunning jumpsuit, and shows a more vibrant, cherry red that could prove very popular. Then on to pink, which you all know is my favourite colour. The entirety of Laura Garcia’s collection basically sums up my idea for autumn/winter and I adore this pink lace look. For a much more in your face pink look Rodarte definitely delivers, potentially meaning that bright pink may come back into fashion. Barbie inspired outfit anyone?
