If you know me then you’ll know that there’s nothing I love more than a lovely skirt; the majority of my outfits include a skirt of some kind and I’d pick a skirt over trousers any day. With so many different types of skirt it can be so hard to choose which skirt is my favourite, so I thought I’d weigh up some of my favourite mini and midi skirts that are currently out there, to help you guys decide which ones to purchase.
MINI SKIRTS
Mini skirts, which first became popular thanks to designs by Mary Quant back in the early 1960s, have been a signature part of feminine style for over half a century and they’re one of the best ways to inject a bit of classy, 60s style into your wardrobe. Mini skirts are available in all sorts of different patterns, materials and shapes, so there truly is one for every one, and every outfit, out there.
I’ve collected together some of my favourite mini skirts on ASOS at the moment; from darker cord numbers to feminine pink skirts, these would fit perfectly into my timeless style. Corduroy is one of my go-to fabrics for the autumn and winter time as it is so rich, thick and textured; perfect for keeping you warm and pairing perfectly with chunky knitwear, without looking too thin. I’ve picked out a couple of cord skirts for this collection, the first is a navy blue coloured skater skirt style mini skirt with button details. The buttons add an extra bit of detail to an otherwise very plain skirt and are a much more expensive looking, and vintage inspired, fastening than a zip. The second corduroy skirt is a pale nude one, perfect for pairing with all of your basic warm toned winter knitwear. This would look great paired with a belt, even a dupe of the iconic Gucci belt, and would also pair well with tights.
Another great fabric for winter is denim, which I’ve chosen in this distressed, leopard print denim. The lightly distressed rips in the skirt add a touch of youth and even a hint of grunge to the outfit, without going too overboard. To ensure that this skirt doesn’t differ too far from my style I would pair this with very elegant pieces, such as a classic black roll neck or blouse.
Plaid and tweed is a big trend this season and these two skirts are perfect example of this. I love this grey plaid number, especially the double breasted buttons and tie waist detail, as it looks just so much classier and womanly than a standard belt. The buttons add shape to the skirt by giving the illusion of pulling you in at the waist and accentuates the overlapping detail where the two layers meet. The second plaid skirt, which has hints of mustard in it, would pair so nicely with a mustard or beige coloured roll neck knit and possibly even a pair of mustard coloured boots if you’re feeling brave.
The last skirt, a pink scallop edged mini skirt, may at first appear too summery for this time of year, but it can definitely be styled up in a warm and cosy way. Try pairing with a cosy cream knit for a girly snuggly outfit.
MIDI SKIRTS
Midi skirts have existed within fashion since the 1920s and have revolutionised the way we wear skirts since then. Midi skirts brought around the end of long, very covered up skirts and added a hint of sexiness into women’s wardrobes.
Midi skirts are one of my favourite skirt shapes and there are so many beautiful midi skirts around at the minute. First up is this gorgeously autumnal toned burgundy pleated skirt, which would look amazing with blouses and jumpers alike. I personally would pair this with warm toned autumnal jumpers, potentially a dark floral pattern, and ankle boots for a great autumnal outfit.
This pink midi skirt with a bow belt detail is different to the typical midi skirt cut as it has a slight wrap around detail. This light pink colour may, at first, seem like a nightmare to style up but pink is honestly so easy to style up in the winter if you know how. Pairing it with a white jumper, as shown in the image, is a great way to wear it, but this would also look great paired with a jumper with pink accents or details to really make the pink pop.
This sheer embroidered midi skirt is absolutely beautiful and really adds a feminine, delicate twist to your look. The delicate nude coloured lace combined with the intricate floral embroidery is a great way to keep your femininity, that is typically only included like this in Spring, and carry it into winter. Knitwear in any of the colours featured in the embroidery would look great paired with this skirt and as it is a long skirt it should keep you warm, even though it’s lace.
This gorgeous double breasted midi skirt is one of my favourite skirts included here as it is just so classy. I can imagine Audrey Hepburn swanning around in this, and if I can picture Audrey Hepburn wearing it then it definitely deserves a place in my wardrobe. This would definitely look best paired with a blouse, to stick with the tailored, classic silhouette, but could also possibly be paired with a roll neck. I would style this up with a cute pair of low blocked heels to tie in with the vintage beauty.
The opaque part of this white lace skirt isn’t a midi skirt length but the white intricate lace extends past it and ends at a midi length, which is why I’ve included it in this section of the post. This may seem a little summery but it would look great styled up with red for a festive party look with heels as lace never fails to look luxurious.
This pink tulle gathered skirt is absolutely beautiful, I can’t even explain why but it reminds me of sea creatures; maybe a jellyfish? Anyway, I absolutely love it and I think it’s gorgeous and so perfect for party season. I would style this up with pearl detailed pieces as I think pearls would really pair well with this shade of pink.
