Modern beauty culture is just another part of our life that has become an incredibly throw away society; we rely on cotton wool pads and face wipes, that inevitably end up being binned, and by making a small change to your makeup routine you can actually make a big impact on our planet. One simple way of doing this is switching up your skincare routine and using a cleanser and muslin cloth duo, such as this one from the Botanics range.
I’ve only really just decided to make the transition to this more ethical way of using skincare but I already feel like it’s going to make a difference. Even though it may feel quite insignificant, after all as a single person I’m only going to be stopping the use of maybe a couple of cotton wool pads a day, but think of how much rubbish could be saved from going to landfill if everyone used a muslin cloth cleanser, even if it’s just a couple of times a week. As a beauty blogger I am always trying out new products and, of course, not all of these will be suitable to use with a cleansing cloth but even using this cleanser sporadically can make a difference. The multi use muslin cloths mean that you don’t have to keep purchasing cotton wool pads, or if you use this in conjunction with a toner you will definitely use less cotton wool pads, which not only helps save the planet it also saves you money. It’s a win-win situation!
Another perk of these Botanics products is that they are cruelty free. Made entirely with natural ingredients they are one of the leading plant based beauty companies and vow to test only on people. This is very important in the beauty industry’s quest towards becoming completely cruelty free. After all, it’s not the animals who want to wear mascara or put a face mask on, so why should they have to suffer and potentially become ill just so we have those privileges?
OTHER WAYS TO MOVE TOWARDS ETHICAL AND SUSTAINABLE BEAUTY
I don’t currently use, or do, all of these things but in the near future I truly hope to become much more aware of my impact on the world around me and make a conscious decision to try and help the planet. These are just a few ideas that you can integrate into your daily beauty and skincare regime to help make a difference.
– Try to only use brands that do not test their products on animals. There are so many brands that don’t test on animals, yet still create amazing products, so there really is no excuse when it comes to ethical, cruelty-free beauty. I have only recently started educating myself properly on this and I’m so interested to see which giant brands are testing their products out on poor innocent animals.
– Don’t use aerosol deodorants; I’m definitely guilty of this one. Next time my deodorant runs out I’m going to try out a roll on one as I’ve seen so many people speaking up about the impact aerosol deodorants have on our planet recently. I honestly haven’t used a roll on deodorant since I was about twelve so if you have any suggestions on what ones are best I’d love for you to comment and give me some suggestions!
– Try and save water. Whether this means filling the sink with water, then washing your face, instead of letting it run while you rinse off your face, or using minimal amounts of products in the shower to decrease the length of time the water is running, reducing your water use is a really easy and helpful way to help the planet.
– Always recycle any packaging that your beauty products come in. The majority of beauty products, such as eye shadow palettes, come in cardboard packaging, which is so easy to recycle. The majority of households have a paper recycling bin, or your local supermarket should offer a recycling unit, simply find out where your local ones are and try to recycle as much packaging as you possibly can.
