This past week may win the award of most exciting week ever: a trip to New York full of gorgeous galleries, delicious food, and, to top it all off, the chance to showcase my work at New York Fashion Week! Plus, I got to share all of it with my boyfriend Ben. It truly is a week that I’ll never ever forget; sometimes in life there are moments that feel almost nostalgic as you are living them, they are moments that you know you will hold close to your heart for years to come, and this week has been filled with them. I will write a post sharing more about my experience at New York Fashion Week, but for now let me share my usual weekly musings.
WHAT’S INSPIRED ME THIS WEEK
As a fashion designer, and general creative type, I am constantly seeking inspiration wherever I am, and these posts are a way to document what has ignited something within me this past week. Whether its artwork I’ve seen online, photography that moved me, or a collection of colour in nature that kick-started a creative idea in my head, I’ll be sharing four ideas that have brought me joy in the past seven days.
R. READING
Green Matters, a sustainable magazine, covers all things green and ethical across the eco space, from fashion to home, and travel to food. They are one of the most reputable magazines in the sustainable space, so I was delighted when they shared an article about the NYFW Remake show that my work was featured in.
The article, written by the wonderful Anna whom I met at the show, shared the truth behind the bad practices of NYFW, and how Remake is aiming to tackle them with their show of upcycled and recycled pieces.
The article is definitely worth a read, and I even get a special mention!
E. EDUCATING
Visiting museums and art galleries is one of my favourite activities when I travel so I leapt at the chance to attend the MET – The Metropolitan Museum of Art – not once, but twice!
I learnt so much about all different areas of art, and, on our first visit, I particularly enjoyed seeing iconic American pieces. Washington Crossing the Delaware by Emanuel Leutze was a particular highlight, especially due to a highly informative tour guide who was giving a talk on it as we stood by in awe.
On our second visit I absolutely loved the rooms dedicated to Impressionism. Degas is my favourite artist so it made my heart very full to arrive at the museum as it opened and have the Degas galleries pretty much to ourselves. The Little Fourteen-Year-Old Dancer, a statue of a ballerina, complete with fabric tutu and hair bow, was my favourite piece. The staging of the room was incredibly beautiful with the statue in the centre and gorgeous depictions of ballerinas covering the walls.
P. PLAYING
On the plane ride over to New York Ben and I watched Priscilla, a Sofia Coppola film all about Elvis’ wife Priscilla, starring Cailee Spaeny and Jacob Elordi.
The movie, though heartbreaking to watch, was immensely good. I never knew much about Elvis’ private life, and didn’t know more about Priscilla beyond her name, so it was enlightening to learn about the story of their tumultuous relationship. The British Airways headphone and tiny plane screen didn’t make for the best viewing experience, but I still thoroughly enjoyed it!
O. OBSESSING OVER
There were so many things to obsess over from our trip, but one stands out. I am celebrating my birthday this coming week, and as a special birthday present Ben got me a gorgeous set of earrings from the MET, a place we both absolutely loved.
They paired perfectly with my dress for the fashion show and they are jewellery that I will forever hold dear.
R. RECOMMENDING
I could recommend so many things from our trip to New York, but I’ll dedicate a whole post to that. For now I’ll just share our favourite meal; the best burger either of us have ever eaten.
Au Cheval, a restaurant in downtown Manhattan, is known for its iconic burgers, featuring two juicy beef burgers, two slices of rich bacon and a fried egg. I’d seen people raving about it online and it definitely did not disappoint – I’ve never tasted anything quite so scrumptious.
T. TREATING MYSELF TO
I treated myself to (and was treated to!) many lovely things whilst in New York it’s hard to choose just one!
One that does come to mind is something that I’d been waiting to get to the US to top up on: Gisou Honey Infused Hair Oil. I first used this hair oil when visiting America a couple of years ago, after my friend Taylor recommended it to me, and I absolutely loved it.
So, when visiting Sephora on 5th Avenue I knew I had to pick up a new bottle. Luscious curls here I come!
