Vol XXI: Friendship Bracelet Making & Springtime Hobbies

I have had a very crafty week; I have been getting myself prepared for my Taylor Swift shows next month by sewing my outfit and making an absurd amount of friendship bracelets. I’ve absolutely loved the chance to be creative and spend my time making things over just being sat scrolling on my phone, and it’s reminded me of how much I love creating something with an almost child-like whimsy. I’m particularly proud of my Folklore inspired dress that I’ve painstakingly been sewing for days now, all that’s left is to sew down the leaves across the bust and to make a matching bag – I can’t wait to see it all finished!

We were blessed with more good weather this weekend so I took the chance to go for another long walk in the park with my friend Sophia. I always look forward to our walks, filled with chatter and laughter, and this one was no different. Plus, it was made even better by a stop off at The Bracebridge, where I tried their new Vimto slushie, a need in this hot weather!

WHAT’S INSPIRED ME THIS WEEK

As a fashion designer, and general creative type, I am constantly seeking inspiration wherever I am, and these posts are a way to document what has ignited something within me this past week. Whether its artwork I’ve seen online, photography that moved me, or a collection of colour in nature that kick-started a creative idea in my head, I’ll be sharing four ideas that have brought me joy in the past seven days.

R. READING

As a member of the National Trust I receive their seasonal magazine every few months, and I had a lovely afternoon spent in the garden reading this summer’s issue in the glorious sunshine.

It’s always so interesting to read about the hidden history of all of the beautiful historical British sites, and see what events are being held across the country in the coming season. It has definitely inspired me to get out and visit some National Trust properties this summer.

E. EDUCATING

This might sound like a silly thing to learn but I have been watching so many friendship bracelet tutorials, to prepare for Taylor Swift, and I have learnt so many new techniques.

I’m definitely a perfectionist when it comes to crafts like this so, naturally, I wanted my bracelets to look as good as they could be, and I didn’t want to just settle for a basic string of beads (even though they look gorgeous too!).

These high standards have led to me learning so many new techniques, and picking up a new hobby, which has been so much fun.

P. PLAYING

I have had Stephen Sanchez’s latest release, Baby Blue Bathing Suit, on repeat. It is his contribution to the soundtrack of Disney+’s documentary on The Beach Boys, which is released on the 24th of May.

As a lover of both Stephen and The Beach Boys I knew this was going to be a hit before I even heard it, so I wasn’t surprised when I absolutely loved it. I only wish we could have had The Beach Boys harmonising on the track!

O. OBSESSING OVER

With my first Taylor Swift Eras Tour show only three and a half weeks away (eek!) I have been making a crazy amount of friendship bracelets and I have been absolutely loving it.

I’ve loved the chance to get crafty, it has actually reminded me of how much I enjoy making things with my hands and being creative. I’ve made countless bracelets, with my favourite songs, lyrics and albums on, and I’ve loved seeing my skills improve and change with each new one. Roll on Taylor Swift!

R. RECOMMENDING

I’ve been planning my summer wardrobe on one of my favourite apps: Whering. It is essentially an app version of the iconic ‘Clueless closet’, where you upload everything you own and style outfits with them.

Ahead of each season I’ve been trying to make seasonal collections of my favourite outfits, new styling options and outfits with pieces that rarely get worn, to encourage me to make the best use of all of the clothes I own.

T. TREATING MYSELF TO

I’m not very good at giving myself time off and letting myself relax, which often leads to me feeling very burnt out. This weekend I was lucky enough to have five days off from my part-time job, that I do alongside setting up my freelance design business, and it gave me the perfect chance to slow down, do more mindful things, and truly relax.
