Vol VI: A Career Update & a Trip to the Cinema

This week brought an unexpected career update – I have now been appointed Editor-in-Chief of People over Product magazine! Other than that, I headed to the cinema to see a captivating Japanese drama, and wrapped up in bundles of layers to try and fight England’s current cold snap.

I can’t believe that after writing about how glorious the weather was last week I’m already back to talking about wrapping up warm and snuggling under blankets to beat the icy cold weather outside, and what better place to snuggle up, crack open some chocolates and get cosy, than a cinema? Ben and I saw Ichiko, a Japanese drama, at the University of Warwick campus’ cinema in Warwick Arts Centre, and it had us on the edge of our seats. More about that later in the post!

The other major, and rather unexpected news of the week, was a big promotion I received, to become Editor-in-Chief of People over Product magazine. The first issue edited and produced by me is launching on the 1st of March, and you will be able to read it here.

WHAT’S INSPIRED ME THIS WEEK

As a fashion designer, and general creative type, I am constantly seeking inspiration wherever I am, and these posts are a way to document what has ignited something within me this past week. Whether its artwork I’ve seen online, photography that moved me, or a collection of colour in nature that kick-started a creative idea in my head, I’ll be sharing four ideas that have brought me joy in the past seven days.

R. READING

I finished A Court of Thorn and Roses by Sarah J. Maas, and now I can say for certain that I truly don’t get the hype. The story left a lot to be desired, to say the least. Plus, why on earth was everyone purring?! I don’t think it’s a series I’ll be continuing with…

I also read a vastly different book, Cultish by Amanda Montell, which focused on the language and linguistic devices used to captivate people into following cults, or cult-like programs. I loved how it covered not only typical cults – such as Jonestown and Waco – but also online social-media led groups, the infamous cult-like scams of MLMs, and gym fanatics.

It was absolutely fascinating to learn about how language hooks people in, resulting in devastating, and sometimes fatal, events. It was a very different read for me, but I really enjoyed it.

E. EDUCATING

I have used, and loved, Procreate, a drawing app on the iPad, for many years now, but I’ve definitely become a little stuck in my ways when it comes to using it.

As Ben treated himself to an iPad last week, and decided to download Procreate, I have found myself seeing it through fresh eyes.

I did a painting tutorial for the first time in years, and found out a load of skills that I’d fallen out of the habit of using.

Who knows, maybe I’ll get into the world of digital art this year!

P. PLAYING

On Saturday Ben and I went to the cinema in Warwick Arts Centre, on his university campus, to see Ichiko, a Japanese drama/thriller.

The brutally devastating story, detailing the life of an unregistered girl living under her dead sister’s name, had us on the edge of our seats, scared to know what tragedy was coming for the main character, Ichiko, next.

It was my first ever Japanese film, but I’d definitely be interested in watching more.

O. OBSESSING OVER

My current styling obsession is little pops of red, in particular, my red Steve Madden mary-janes. I got them on Depop for £25 – when they were originally priced at £100! – and I’ve been obsessed with them ever since.

Adding romantic little pops of red and pink throughout my outfits seems particularly apt in February, the month of love, and I can’t wait to see how I style them up in the warmer months.

R. RECOMMENDING

As the newly appointed Editor-in-Chief it will be no shock that this week’s recommendation is People over Product magazine.

We are a quarterly magazine discussing all things sustainable fashion; from bio-based materials and ethical designers, to fashion tech and interviews with sustainable activists.

Our next issue – the first created by me – will be available on March 1st here.

T. TREATING MYSELF TO

It may seem a little too early for it, but my favourite treat this time of year has to be Creme Egg ice cream.

It only comes around once a year, and it usually flies off the shelves, so you have to get in there quick.

It’s pretty pricey at £4.50 a tub, but I can honestly say it’s my all-time favourite. Roll on Easter!
