I’ve mentioned it time and time again but I adore Valentine’s Day, as a hopeless romantic why wouldn’t I love a whole day dedicated to love and romance? The annoying thing with love and romance is though, that it is often regarded as a thing solely reserved for people in relationships, not for the single people, like me.
The last couple of years I’ve actually been in a relationship for Valentine’s Day, which made this year all the more depressing when it really hit home that I’d be spending it alone. As I gradually got more and more upset as the day got closer and closer I began to really think about what Valentine’s Day is all about. Primarily, this is the day of love, as Valentine’s Day is traditionally regarded as a day for love and devotion; both words that are not singularly connected to relationships. We can be loving and devoted towards ourselves just as much, if not more than, we can be to somebody else.
“You are powerful, strong and you are capable of providing everything you need, all by yourself.”
Loving yourself is the single most important thing you can do to make not just today, but every day, a little easier. A day all about love is a perfect time to really focus on loving yourself, and treating yourself how you deserve to be treated, so why not celebrate your very own little Valentine’s Day. Pop on a face mask (why not try one of the ones from my Face Mask Friday series?), watch a rom com, write poetry and send yourself flowers; do everything you wish a significant other would do for you, and realise that you are your own soulmate. You are powerful, strong and you are capable of providing everything you need, all by yourself.
“Pop on a face mask, watch a rom com, write poetry and send yourself flowers (…) realise that you are your own soulmate.”
You survived before they came into your life, and you shall survive long after they’re gone. In fact, you’ll do far more than survive; you will flourish. Valentine’s Day can sometimes feel like it’s only there to highlight your pain, but why not use it as a way of acknowledging the love that exists all around you. Your love for your friends, your love for your family, your love for yourself and your love for life. Be your own Valentine.

Disclaimer: This post took more than a few tears to write and it’s clearly evident that heartbreak is still taking up residence in my heart, so although I may have made all of this sound very easy I know that it’s not. Spending Valentine’s alone can feel like such an isolating experience, so please be kind to yourself. If you’re feeling a little too lonely or sad please don’t hesitate to message me; we can have our own little Galentine’s Day!
