Monochrome can be so scary to wear if you’re used to wearing light colours, but worn in the right way black and white paired together can actually look very soft, feminine and classy. I’m sharing my top tips on wearing monochrome to truly achieve a gentle, yet put together, look and maintain the femininity that I’m notorious for.
INVEST IN BLACK TAILORED SHORTS
High waisted shorts and tights may scream ‘2012’ to some people, but once you push past that misconception you’ll see that wearing black tailored shorts is a fabulous way to incorporate monochrome looks into your wardrobe. I’ve had this pair of black tailored shorts for many, many years but I’ve linked a very similar alternative pair down below for you to recreate the look with. Another great thing about tailored shorts is that they can be tastefully paired with tights, particularly low denier black tights, which will help keep you warm as we move into winter. My favourite way to wear black tailored shorts is to pair them with a very feminine blouse; the boxy shape of the shorts can become slightly masculine if you don’t pair them with a very girly piece and this pussybow victoriana style blouse is perfect.
GO SNUGGLY WITH IT
Snuggly black jumpers and cardigans, like this old one from H&M (newer alternative linked below), are a perfect way to include monochrome in your outfit whilst, not only staying warm, but also maintaining a very soft image. Jumpers like this look great paired with high waisted skirts, like my grey plaid from Primark (alternative linked below), tights and heeled boots, but look equally good with midi skirts, or even tailored trousers. These adorable pom pom detail heeled boots are so cute, they’re last season from Primark, but if you want to channel these cute eskimo vibes then you can shop a very similar alternative here.
ADD A POP OF COLOUR
Adding a pop of colour to an otherwise entirely monochrome outfit is a great way to add a touch of personality and inject some life into the outfit. For this outfit I added touches of blue through the detailing on the skirt and the violet blue roll neck jumper. The colour really stands out against the very flat monochrome, no matter how subtle the colour is, and creates a very tied together look. If you do add a pop of colour to your outfit you could potentially accessorise with this outfit too, for example adding a blue bag, necklace or earrings to this look for an even more coherent, coordinated outfit.
INVEST IN A BLACK FAUX FUR COAT
Faux fur coats are one of my favourite winter looks as they’re just so versatile and can be thrown on top of any outfit, monochrome or not, and make them look instantly like you’re ready for a party. At first a fur coat may seem a tad too fancy for everyday wear, but truly what is the problem with being overdressed? Overdressing is a style, and it’s one that can look beautiful when perfected; a faux fur coat is just one part of perfecting that style this winter.
