Fashion Week Series – Biggest Trends From NYFW

Fashion Month has kicked off with a fabulous week of runway collections, street style and glamour at New York Fashion Week from the 6th of September to the 14th of September. New York kicked off the exploration of different trends that will be surfacing next season in Spring/Summer 2019 and presented a whole host of innovative and creative pieces on their runways, from a range of different designers. I’m going to be exploring the similarities and popular styles that I noticed amongst the different collections and doing a little trend forecasting of what we’ll be wearing next Spring, as well as sharing some of my personal favourite pieces with you.

Monochrome

These collections differed from what you’d typically expect from a Spring/Summer fashion show as many of the different designers opted for a darker, more monochrome colour palette. Whether that was an entirely monochrome collection, like Nicholas K or Kimora Lee Simmons, or just a hint of monochrome, combined with other colours and prints as seen in Tom Ford, it’s evident that monochrome, and a neutral, black, white and nude based colour palette, will be on trend next year.

Red

Another colour that is going to be big next year is red; particularly a bright, vibrant poppy red. The Red Valentino collection was overflowing with vibrant red tones added to lots of different patterns or simply as a block colour and it is very evident that red is going to be the colour of the season. This red leather jacket from Elie Tahari shows another way to interpret this colour trend into a more edgier, outerwear look. Coloured jackets have been very popular this year and it looks like it could be set to be another trend next year. Finally this long red patterned dress from Jonathan Cohen shows a really classy, occasion-wear interpretation of the red trend; I really like this dress, especially the neckline as it ties into the blazer trend in a more feminine way.

Stripes

Stripes, particularly thin pinstripe style stripes, are coming back into fashion next season. These thin vertical stripes create an elongating effect which makes you appear taller and slimmer; which I’ll never complain about! I love this first colourful piece from Red Valentino, which is giving me very rustic vibes, as I like the mix of vibrant, yet subtle colours, and how the difference in the thickness and proximity of line changes the piece. The contrasting stripes in the second piece, from the Rag & Bone collection, are interesting as it suggests that we may see some contrasting striped pieces hitting our shelves. The final piece is from Bassike‘s collection, which featured plenty of pieces adorned in stripes and lines, for example this striped dress layered on top of a white long sleeved top.

Oversized Shoulders & Sleeves

This oversized shoulder look from Ulla Johnson is gorgeous, I love the broderie anglaise detail across the dress as it ties in with the traditional Spring trend which is very feminine and delicate. This second look from PH5 has an accent on one shoulder with an oversized, gathered shoulder detail. This really showcases the trend in a unique and experimental way. Finally, this piece from Dundas shows the oversized shoulder trend in a very obvious way; it is even more accentuated by the pulled in belt which contrasts the large shoulders with a tiny waist.

Florals

Florals in Spring are a given, but from what we can see from NYFW, bigger, bolder florals will be coming into fashion next year. Keeping in with the colour palettes of the season, black and red, Jonathan Cohen showcased bright red florals in a large, vibrant print. Adding a little more colour to the palette VFiles had crazy colourful floral pieces which hung off the model in large drapes creating a gown like shape. Cinq à Sept went for a more conventional shape for their designs but stuck with the trend of bright, colourful florals all over the piece. I particularly like the combination of yellow and navy in this piece.

Pleated Skirts

I love this pleated skirt trend, especially when it is in the midi skirt style, as I think it really fits my style. This patterned one from Red Valentino is incredibly beautiful and also ties in with the red trend as it is made up of plenty of red hues and floral prints. In a similar way this Novis piece includes lots of vibrant floral prints across a pleated midi skirt; the bright emerald colour is beautiful and we may see a return of  green next season. This final piece from Warm shows how we may see this pleated detail crop up in dresses as well as in skirts.

Ruching

This ruched skirt from Tom Ford shows a perfect way to include ruching in a look; ruched body-con dresses and pencil skirts are a perfectly wearable way to bring this trend into your everyday wardrobe.  I love this 80s inspired ruched dress from Norma Kamali which is adorned in diamantes and even has a ruched neck tie detail; I would definitely wear this dress on a night out! This last number from Dundas includes a ruched waist detail to accentuate the waist and add to the shape of the garment; this works well in this figure hugging design as it adds to the feminine shape and design of the piece.

That concludes all of the main trends that stuck out to me from NYFW. Next Spring we’ll be seeing a lot of vibrant colours and patterns on our shelves; from bright reds and yellows to vibrant florals, next year will challenge our normal expectations of Spring, where our clothes are normally pastel coloured with soft florals and ruffles. Although I typically go for softer tones and more muted patterns I’m actually quite excited for next Spring to see how I can interpret these new trends into my wardrobe and use them for my own style.
