Pyjamas are a rare piece of fashion, in the way that everybody wears them. Jeans may be popular, but they still aren’t worn by 100% of the population. Everyone, however, does have something they choose to sleep in. Whether that’s a pair of pyjamas, a nightdress or a night shirt, these typically lounge-wear pieces can easily be transformed into outerwear, simply by styling them up with different pieces. I first started experimenting with this look earlier on this year and thought I’d challenge myself to do it with a couple of different pairs of pyjamas before sharing it with you guys. Since then I’ve created a lot of different looks using a couple of pyjama tops (I’m still trying to work out how to style up pyjama bottoms to be wearable throughout the day!).
What to look for in potential outerwear pyjamas…
If I’m planning to wear a pyjama top for bed, but also incorporated into an outfit, the first thing I look for is how much it resembles a typical piece of nightwear. Anything made of flannel, adorned with buttons or with any slogans to do with sleep probably won’t work when trying to curate this look. Instead, reach for silk/satin pieces, such as the satin short sleeved blouse pictured, which can be styled up in a variety of ways and can pass as a normal top or blouse.
I find that silk button up blouses and silk camisoles work particularly well when wearing pyjamas as outerwear as these styles can often be found in general clothing. Silk cami tops can look stylish, particularly in summer, styled up with shorts or even jeans and it’s a look that I’ve noticed is becoming increasingly popular. I’ve seen quite a lot of people styling up silk camis with jeans and an over-sized cardigan, which is a look I can’t wait to experiment with in the autumn months. As silk camis are becoming increasingly popular who’s to say that you can’t use a pyjama top to create this look? My pink satin cami from Primark cost me less than £5 as part of a pyjama set, yet it creates the same look as a silk cami bought from more high end retailers, so not only does this idea save you money, as it allows you to get a daytime and sleepwear look in one, it also saves you buying a much more expensive cami from another retailer.
What do you guys think, would you ever wear pyjamas out of the house? I’m interested to know so tell me in the comments below!
