Why My Makeup Routine Changed

These past few weeks I have been rather MIA from my blog due to performing in my school’s performance of The Addams Family, and in order to look dead I’ve had to wear incredibly heavy makeup, with full, heavy eyeshadow and winged liner. I’m sure you’ve noticed from my photos and videos that I don’t usually go for heavy makeup, I’m more of a ‘your face but better’ sort of makeup girl (with the addition of shimmering highlight of course!).

Having to use lots of heavy makeup and having to relearn how to perfect a winged liner sharp enough to kill reminded me of what I used to wear as my go-to look. I used to spend hours watching YouTube tutorials and recreating intense, bold looks. I always wore winged liner, I had colourful lids and matte liquid lipstick permanently on my lips. I saw so many other people wearing this and just accepted that this was how I’d have to do my makeup too.

It took me a long time to realise that this wasn’t representing who I really was. Of course, you can dress the way I do and still have totally glam makeup, but for me, wearing a soft pink dress and combining it with a bold blue heavy eye look just didn’t make sense. I slowly but surely ditched the overly heavy eye makeup and transitioned to a softer pinky nude array of lipsticks. My foundation became more dewy and I looked a lot more like a natural beauty.

Now I feel so much more myself in my makeup, because I went with what I actually wanted to wear, not what society, or other girls I knew, were showing me I should be putting on my face. I still watch those amazing beauty YouTubers creating these intricate, pigmented looks and every so often, for an event or party, I may even recreate them; but on a daily basis I wear a lot more subdued, natural look.
